A Livable Design

Sports & Times is a blog featuring elegant writing. Under Raven Gildea's tutelage I created a custom WordPress theme for the site.

the problem

Readability can be difficult on the Internet. Since this is a blog, the design needed to be readable. There were issues with font-size and line-height that needed to be addressed. We did not want the reader to feel like it was a chore to consume the content.

the solution

I spent a lot of time testing font-size and line-height. We decided on Georgia typeface at a hefty 16 pt. We went huge with the headlines and sub-headlines so there would still be a hierarchy.

The final design is clean and doesn’t make you work to read (because no one’s paying you to read).

file structure

Understanding the WordPress naming convention was crucial to creating and implementing a custom WordPress theme.

WordPress uses different template files to create different views of our site content, depending on how the user queries the database.

Edit each of these files as needed, to display the HTML code needed for your site design. Remove any HTML tags you don't need, and add in any you do need.

We used the Contact Form 7 plugin. I used Firebug to sniff out the Form's classes and style it to match brand guidelines.
